Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII is an action-packed flight combat video game available on Microsoft Windows, Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii. Developed by Ubisoft Bucharest in 2006, it features a diverse selection of 46 World War II fighter planes and immerses players in various historical events as part of a fictional squadron. With online support, up to 16 players can engage in head-to-head and cooperative battles.


The Wii version hit the shelves in March 2007, while the PlayStation 3 version was a launch title for North America in December 2006 and arrived in other markets in March 2007, with the Japanese release following in July. This edition includes fresh missions, a 16-player online mode, and compatibility with the PS3 controller's motion sensing capabilities.

Notably, the European Windows version of the game is safeguarded by StarForce, and at least one American Windows release also incorporates this protection. A sequel titled "Blazing Angels 2: Secret Missions of WWII" was launched in 2007.

Furthermore, an arcade adaptation of Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII was developed by Global VR in 2008, based on the Windows version. The initial arcade cabinet featured a seated design with flight stick and throttle controls, as well as a seat thumper to simulate enemy attacks. In 2011, an upright model was introduced.

The player's squadron in the game is named the "Angels of Dunkirk," composed of the player, known as "Captain," alongside squadmates Tom ("the shield"), Joe ("the mechanical wizard"), and Frank ("the hunter"). The game introduces a German Ace who first confronts the squadron during the Battle of Britain, hurling insults at them. He reappears in the final mission of the game in 1945 Berlin, leading the Nowotny Squadron, also known as Jagdgeschwader 7, a squadron of elite German aces flying experimental jet planes. The player ultimately shoots down the Ace when he poses a grave threat to Tom.

The storyline varies slightly across different gaming consoles. Generally, it follows the Angels of Dunkirk through various World War II battles and missions, including the Battle of Britain, Liberation of Paris, Battle of Midway, D-Day, and the Battle of Berlin. However, in the Wii and PS3 versions, the story is enriched with additional character development. The player now narrates scenes before each level, explaining the upcoming battle, and actively engages with wingmen during gameplay, issuing commands and holding conversations. Other alterations involve Tom being revealed as Joe's brother-in-law instead of a random pilot saved by the player from a German fighter squadron, and Joe getting shot down during the D-Day mission.

The game commences in Britain in 1940, where American pilots join the Royal Air Force to combat Germany during World War II. The player, known as the Captain, trains alongside squadmate Joe and rescues fellow pilot Tom from a German fighter attack, who turns out to be Joe's brother-in-law.

As the game progresses, the Captain and his squadron, consisting of Tom, Frank, and Joe, participate in battles defending Dunkirk and repelling German attacks over London. They encounter a skilled German air ace during these missions. Later, the squadron is deployed to North Africa, where the Captain conducts reconnaissance on German positions and fights valiantly to support British forces in a fierce battle in the Libyan desert. Afterward, the squadron returns to the United States to aid in training American pilots.
