The Healing Game, Van Morrison's twenty-sixth studio album, was released in 1997 under Polydor Records. It achieved Top Ten status in four countries and reached the Top Twenty in three others. After releasing two jazz-oriented albums, this record marked a departure as Morrison incorporated elements of blues and pop sensibilities into his music. Notably, it's the only album recorded after 1980 that Rolling Stone deemed among his top ten works, describing it as a "clear highlight of his mid-period discography."


The title track of the album delves into the tradition of street singing in Belfast, a theme close to Morrison's heart. He expressed amazement at the disappearing oral tradition of street music, emphasizing its cultural significance. Another track, "Rough God Goes Riding," draws inspiration from W. B. Yeats' poem "The Second Coming," featuring Leo Green's saxophone complementing Morrison's vocals. In "Waiting Game," Morrison cryptically references "the brother of the snake," a phrase interpreted as a tribute to his late friend Jim Morrison and a nod to the Garden of Eden. "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" evokes the classic children's book "The Wind in the Willows" and features Paddy Moloney on uilleann pipes alongside Phil Coulter on piano. "Burning Ground" explores Morrison's childhood memories of jute being shipped to Belfast from India.

Gameplay:


Music critic Greil Marcus praised the album, describing Morrison as a commanding presence in every aspect of the music, though he advised listeners to pay close attention to the subtleties at the fringes, as they often reveal the deeper essence of the songs.

In a 2019 reissue review, All About Jazz hailed "Healing Game" as one of the most comprehensive expressions of Van Morrison's personal and musical journey, with the artist revisiting the jazz and rhythm and blues influences that shaped his early work. The reissue also noted the exceptional quality of the new band Morrison had assembled.

The 2008 remastered edition of the album includes a bonus track, "At the End of the Day," originally a B-side of the third single, "Rough God Goes Riding," which was considered one of the standout tracks in Van Morrison's six-album reissue series. Furthermore, in 2019, the album was reissued as a triple CD, featuring bonus material from studio sessions and a live performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 17, 1997. The second disc of this release includes collaborations with notable artists such as John Lee Hooker, Carl Perkins, and British skiffle star Lonnie Donegan.
