In Avernum 3: Ruined World, players assume control of a group of adventurers, which can consist of up to four characters. These characters have the flexibility to utilize various combat tactics, including melee and ranged weapons, as well as magic spells. The game employs a skill-based system, where players can select a character class at the start of the game, determining their initial skills. However, the player is given the freedom to further develop their characters by training them in 28 distinct skills, encompassing everything from combat proficiency to arcane knowledge and first aid. Players can also access over 60 different spells and combat techniques, such as offensive spells, summoning abilities, blessings, curses, and healing rituals. Avernum 3 introduces intricate scripted encounters designed to encourage diverse tactical approaches.

Gameplay:


The game's expansive world dynamically changes over time, with towns falling to marauding monsters and refugees relocating between settlements. Its open-ended design accommodates various playstyles, allowing players to engage in combat with monsters, pursue alternative careers as merchants or bounty hunters, or even disregard the main quest entirely. Combat in Avernum 3 unfolds in a turn-based format, with creatures taking sequential actions, including movement, ability usage, and attacks.

The Avernum series is set in the subterranean realm of Avernum, a destination for minor criminals and rebels cast into its depths from the surface world. As Avernum 3 commences, the Avernites have discovered a way to escape their subterranean confinement, but the surface world faces relentless monster invasions. Failure to halt this incursion would leave no safe refuge on the surface.

Jeff Vogel, the developer responsible for programming and game design, decided to remake Avernum III to make it compatible with modern systems, port it to newer platforms, and enhance the overall game design. He envisioned it as his most expansive game, drawing inspiration from the grand scope of The Elder Scrolls series.
