Blackwell is a series of five graphic adventure video games created by Dave Gilbert, an independent game developer at Wadjet Eye Games. These games revolve around the central characters Rosangela Blackwell, a spiritual medium, and her spirit guide, Joey Mallone. Together, they collaborate to aid lingering spirits in their transition to the afterlife.


The inaugural installment in the series, titled "The Blackwell Legacy," made its debut on December 23, 2006. The game introduces us to Rosangela Blackwell, also known as Rosa, a young freelance writer residing a solitary life in New York City. Rosa's only close family member, her aunt Lauren Blackwell, had been in a coma at a local hospital for many years and eventually passed away. Shortly thereafter, Rosa is assigned to cover a college dormitory suicide for a small newspaper.


Gameplay:


As the day progresses, Rosa experiences persistent headaches, culminating in the unexpected appearance of a ghost named Joey Mallone in her apartment. Joey reveals that Rosa shares the same spiritual abilities as her aunt, making her a "medium," tasked with assisting ghosts trapped in the mortal realm to find peace and move on. Initially reluctant, Rosa eventually accepts this revelation and embarks on a mission to solve the mystery surrounding the ghost haunting a dog park, which leads her to discover that the ghost is one of three close friends. These friends had unintentionally summoned a restless spirit using a Ouija board, resulting in two of them taking their own lives.

Rosa learns how to help the trapped ghost, and as she does so, the third girl attempts suicide but is rescued and taken to the hospital. Rosa locates her there, along with the restless ghost, and aids both of them in finding closure. Following this, Rosa questions Joey about why her aunt, Lauren, stopped being a medium. Joey explains that Lauren chose to raise Rosa after the untimely death of Rosa's parents in a car accident. Contemplating her life and her stagnant writing career, Rosa decides to follow in her aunt's footsteps and embrace her role as a medium on a full-time basis.

Joey Mallone serves as the spirit guide for the Blackwell family. Originating from the Roaring 20s, Joey worked in a tailor shop before meeting his demise at the hands of mobsters. Through a mysterious and undisclosed series of events, he becomes spiritually linked to the Blackwell family, starting with Rosa's grandmother. Joey possesses a dry and sarcastic demeanor, often lamenting the eternal and often thankless nature of his role as a spirit guide. He cannot stray more than 30 feet from his designated medium at any time. Despite his gruff exterior, Joey genuinely cares for the Blackwell women he is bound to, always striving to protect them when they face danger.

Final Words:


Lauren, Rosa's aunt on her father's side, takes the spotlight in the second game. She was a medium during the 1970s in New York City. Lauren had mostly resigned herself to this fate, harboring some resentment for how it kept her separated from her brother. Nevertheless, she possessed a charming personality and an adept ability to extract information from people, a skill that Rosa doesn't share to the same extent. Lauren initially pledged to abandon her life as a medium but ended up spending decades institutionalized before her eventual passing at the beginning of the first game. In a humorous twist, she reveals in the final game that she had tried to prepare Rosa for a life as a medium by dressing her cherished teddy bear to resemble Joey.
