 The Stone Introduction:

The Stone is an online game that was developed by the web company Abject Modernity Internet Creations Inc. in 1995. While the game itself was created in 1996, it was not released as a consumer product until 1997. What made it unique at the time was that players had to purchase a physical stone that contained the login credentials for the website.

In 1999, Forbes magazine featured The Stone in a profile. A documentary film titled "Stoners," directed by Rod Bruinooge and Scott Jaworski, was released in September 2004. The film explored the online gaming community that had formed around The Stone, and its soundtrack featured music from Pink Floyd's "The Division Bell" album.

Gameplay:

The game's puzzles were located in an area called The Immediate, comprising a total of 216 Stone puzzles. These puzzles were divided into six categories, each with six different levels of difficulty. Solving all of these puzzles was said to unlock an ancient mystery known as the Enigma, a secret closely guarded by the Stonekeepers.

Players of The Stone were often referred to as "stoners." When faced with a challenging puzzle, a stoner could visit The Commons and seek a nudge or hint from other players who had already solved that particular puzzle. Once a stoner had successfully solved all available Stone puzzles, they were granted access to the Sisyphus Lodge.

The Stone Championship Tournament, also known as the Final Six Tournament, commenced on September 30, 2005. The player who first solved all six final puzzles would be crowned the Champion of The Stone and awarded the status of Stonekeeper. This tournament was won on August 11, 2007, by two players, "Gary_" and "cinnabar." The solution to the Enigma was discovered on August 22, 2007, by a player named "grissy."

Following the completion of the Final Six Tournament, the tournament puzzles were opened to all remaining Stone players in a Redux version, featuring slightly different answers for some of the puzzles. This Redux was won by players named "BlindSide" and "morgana."

Final Words:

Subsequent to the Redux, a set of eight final puzzles, including the last-ever Stone puzzle called "Essence," was released as a mini-tournament known as "Outside the Immediate." This mini-tournament was won by players named "Ultraspx," "morgana," "irisbb," "enobarbus," and "BlindSide."

On April 3, 2008, at Midnight PST, The Stone permanently shut down. However, the puzzles from The Stone can still be found at The Stone Monument (now hosted at Scarecrow's Field). It's worth noting that no user data was preserved, so users must re-solve the puzzles of the Immediate. Stoners can still seek nudges and hints through the Scarecrow's Field forums.
